Portland Airport to Receive First Shipment of Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Zenith Energy’s Portland Terminal
Delivery marks milestone in Zenith’s pledge to phase out crude oil storage, advancing Oregon’s clean energy goals
“This is a historic moment for Portland and the aviation industry at PDX. For the first time, Sustainable Aviation Fuel is arriving at PDX, and Zenith is proud to help make it possible,” said Grady Reamer, Chief Commercial Officer of Zenith Energy. “This milestone not only supports the state’s ambitious climate goals but also positions Portland as a leader in the clean energy transition.”
With SAF being the only commercially viable, low-carbon alternative to conventional jet fuel, Zenith is paving the way for Portland to achieve its climate goals. At the Portland Terminal, traditional jet fuel is blended 50/50 with the renewable portion to create SAF, which is designed to reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation industry. It is made from sustainable, renewable, low-carbon feedstocks, such as agricultural byproducts or non-edible natural seed oils, and has lower emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. The use of SAF can help the aviation sector meet its goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a more sustainable future. Additionally, SAF has similar performance characteristics to conventional jet fuel, making it an attractive alternative for airlines to use.
As the only facility in Oregon storing the 100% renewable SAF component, Zenith’s Portland Terminal plays a critical role in the state’s clean energy future. By phasing out crude oil storage and replacing it with renewable fuel by October 2027, Zenith is helping deliver the supply needed to meet Oregon’s Climate Protection Plan, the Clean Fuels Program, and Portland’s Climate Emergency Workplan. These policies result from the leadership of state and local officials, all of whom incentivized the use of renewables and expanded the market.
This first shipment of SAF to PDX not only marks an environmental achievement but also strengthens Oregon’s economic future. Investments in new infrastructure to transport low-carbon fuels like SAF throughout the Pacific Northwest will bolster the state’s clean energy economy for decades to come.
